Peruvian authorities order the blocking of more than 120 sports websites due to illegal activity.
After a request from 1190 Sports, a member of the Alliance Against Audiovisual Piracy, the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property of Peru (INDECOPI) ordered the country's internet providers to block access to 128 websites that were illegally broadcasting sports events.
Peru’s state copyright authority, INDECOPI, responded to an investigation led by 1190 Sports, a member of the Alliance, by issuing a precautionary measure requiring internet service providers to block websites that stream sports events without a license, in violation of the law.
“These types of rulings are undoubtedly crucial for the Alliance. They significantly help us continue and strengthen the work we do alongside our members in this fight against illegal practices,” highlighted Gustavo López, executive director of the Alliance, adding: “We deeply appreciate the thorough work and strong commitment of INDECOPI, which is highly valuable in the fight against organized crime.”
Currently, Uruguay's Regulatory Unit of Communication Services (URSEC) has the authority to allow live sports rights holders to directly approach internet providers and request the immediate blocking of websites that illegally broadcast their content.
In this regard, the chairman of the board of the Alliance and regional anti-piracy manager of Vrio Corp., Jorge Bacaloni, stated: “We hope that entities like INDECOPI will have new tools that enable their excellent work to translate into immediate actions that instantly disable those who violate copyright laws,” emphasizing: “Such measures would represent significant progress and provide important support to the intense work that the Alliance carries out, in coordination with different state entities, to combat piracy.”
